Millicent René has been a costumer for theatrical productions for over 45 years and last worked with The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, in Palm Springs, California for 13 years. Frustrated by the lack of original patterns for period pieces, she decided to form her own pattern company called AGELESS PATTERNS. The company is dedicated to preserving the patterns and reproduces them in their actual sizes as originally printed. Seam allowances, markings, straight of grain and original sewing instructions have been added to the patterns for ease in sewing. Miss René works out of her home in Chino Valley, Arizona faithfully reproducing all of the patterns by hand. Currently she has 780 patterns and is drafting more daily. The patterns are all from the era 1867-1917. She has also published 11 other books and is working on other books to aid costumers and re-enactors. I very much like the reproductions AND the descriptions. So often, we only get the pictures but not the original written material that went with them. Though I am a big fan of color, I do not mind that these are black and white. The reproductions of the line work is good. it must be understood that these illustrations were originally published in black and white. Coloring of plates was a very expensive and labor intensive process. The only reason I did not give it a full five stars is that the title says "1871 - 1898. Yes, this is true, however, there is only one gown dated 1871, followed with one for 1874 and one for 1887. The remaining 113 designs are from the 1890s. I was really hoping for more of an even spread over the three decades. If you are looking for a nice representation of a variety of 1890s designs this is really good. If you are looking for 1870s and 1880s you will want to try other publications.Product details

The book is put together very well. I sew for pleasure and have made Victorian dresses I wear at our local museum where I am an assistant curator and docent. This book has enough description of the fashions that if you are at least a somewhat experienced seamstress, you could duplicate a reasonable facimile of the fashions shown. It is a great book for the price.
I enjoyed the book but felt it would have been greatly enhanced by being in color. The detailed drawings were excellent but the book should have included colored drawings.
I had to go online to find some of the dresses and see what shades they were.
This "book " is a collection of photocopies of of what must have been an excellent book about Worth and his work. Black and white, very difficult to tell the details. A color book would have been nice.
